Apple’s change of direction
Quite without anybody really noticing, Apple has undergone something akin to a Damascene conversion. And what really disappoints me is that the company which could easily make the most out of this unprecedented shift doesn’t appear to have noticed either. Yes, that Other Company – you know: Microsoft. Which makes me think that those who have recently criticised Steve Ballmer for a lack of true technological awareness (or even market awareness) may be closer to the mark than I’d realised.
Upgrading Microsoft Office
Upgrading to new versions of Microsoft Office is often discussed in terms of new features or improved ergonomics. But we found other reasons to refrain from automatically upgrading our corporate licences to the very latest versions of Microsoft’s finest…
Apple does love surprises…
Oh that Steve Jobs, he is a one! After all the excited conjecture about an “Apple Tablet” earlier this year, then the relatively low-key new product launches in September, he manages to catch the press completely flat-footed with a number of really impressive product launches timed to – aha! – “coincide” with Microsoft’s launch of Windows 7.
Really impressive? ‘What’, I hear you say, ‘you mean a couple of iMac upgrades, a new MacBook and a fancy mouse? I think not!’
Web design with DFM2HTML
I’ve been meaning to write about this little wonder for a while now. DFM2HTML is a very unusual web editor. Yes, it’s WYSIWYG (sort of), but it’s much, much more powerful than most WYSIWYG editors. Why? Because the concept of “nesting” is used throughout – every aspect of the program is governed by this CSS/XML concept, which makes it both exceptionally flexible and (occasionally) irritatingly quirky. But the flexibility vastly outweighs the quirks, especially in the latest version, 3.5.
Software – the alternatives
We’ve been working in the SME/SMB sector for nearly 20 years, and over that time we’ve used and experimented with an awful lot of software. Why?
Open-source collaboration
Over the years, we’ve been keeping a very close eye on open-source content management systems, wikis and other collaboration platforms. Finally, about 18 months ago, we took the plunge and set up our extranet using open-source software (switching away from a Microsoft SharePoint-hosted site in the process).
